ACL Reconstruction Surgery

  • When Is ACL Reconstruction Recommended?

ACL reconstruction may be recommended when the anterior cruciate ligament is torn and knee instability affects daily movement or physical activity.

    • MRI-confirmed ACL tear
    • Knee instability during walking, pivoting, or sports
    • Recurrent episodes of the knee “giving way”
    • Associated injuries involving meniscus or cartilage
    • Failure of conservative treatment such as physiotherapy

To determine suitability for surgery, MRI scans and medical history are reviewed prior to treatment, allowing appropriate planning and decision-making.

  • About the Procedure

ACL reconstruction is performed arthroscopically to restore knee stability by replacing the torn ligament with a graft.

    • Minimally invasive arthroscopic technique
    • Precise placement of a tendon graft (autograft or allograft)
    • Restoration of knee stability and function
    • Intraoperative assessment to ensure proper positioning

The procedure typically takes 60–90 minutes and is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia.

  • Recovery & Treatment Abroad Coordination
    • Hospital stay: same-day discharge or overnight stay
    • Total stay in Turkey: approximately 5–7 days
    • Early mobilisation with support
    • Structured physiotherapy programme
    • Return to daily activities: 4–6 weeks
    • Return to sports: typically 6–9 months

Recovery requires structured rehabilitation and ongoing follow-up.

For international patients, treatment abroad is delivered through a coordinated medical programme including pre-travel evaluation, structured in-hospital care, detailed discharge documentation, and organised post-return follow-up to ensure continuity of care.

Professional and Compassionate I travelled to Turkey with Healing Journey in late January 2025. After a lengthy video call with Dr Mehmet and Anastasia, their reassurance convinced me to choose them. From start to finish everything went so smoothly. A car picked me up from the airport at 9pm on Sunday evening and took me straight to the hospital, where surprisingly Dr Mehmet and Anastasia were there too greet me. Tests and rays were done immediately and surgery followed the next morning.
Hospital staff were absolutely amazing, always so efficient and friendly. The surgeon visited every morning during my stay to check on my progress. Anastasia visited most days and kept in touch by text at all times.. SO comforting. She has continued to keep in touch after my return to UK I would not hesitate in recommending Healing Journey to anyone who is thinking about travelling to Turkey for any type of surgery. They went above and beyond my expectations throughout the whole process.

Great professional service.
I selected Healing Journey after searching for top rated medical travel services, and providers of hip replacement surgery in Turkey. This was based on the excellent reviews given of their services, the location (Antalya not Istanbul) and overall package. They were very proactive in discussing my needs from the start, and Anastasia has been the ever present professional who has coordinated all the services I needed, with efficiency and good humour. She made it a delight to work with and to have at the end of a phone/message to resolve any queries. She provided such a great personal service that I was made to feel like I was her main client - obviously I wasn't but such a good impression is so very important!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an ACL injury diagnosed?

ACL injuries are diagnosed through a combination of clinical examination and imaging studies. During the examination, specific stability tests are performed to assess ligament function. MRI is typically used to confirm the tear and evaluate associated structures such as the meniscus or cartilage.

Do I always need ACL reconstruction?

ACL reconstruction is usually recommended when knee instability affects daily activities, work, or sports. In some cases, patients with lower activity levels may be managed without surgery, but this depends on clinical findings, functional demands, and the risk of further joint damage.

What type of graft is used for ACL reconstruction?

Common graft options include hamstring tendon or patellar tendon grafts. The choice depends on patient-specific factors such as age, activity level, anatomy, and surgeon preference, with the goal of restoring stability and long-term function.

How long does ACL reconstruction surgery take?

The procedure typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes. The exact duration may vary depending on the complexity of the injury and whether additional procedures, such as meniscus treatment, are required.

When can I walk after ACL reconstruction?

Most patients begin walking with support within the first 1–2 days after surgery. Early mobilisation is important to reduce stiffness and support recovery, while weight-bearing is gradually increased under guidance.

What does the surgery involve, including anaesthesia and hospital stay?

ACL reconstruction is usually performed under spinal anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on patient and clinical factors. It is typically a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure, and most patients are discharged the same day or after one night in hospital.

When can I return to sports after ACL reconstruction?

Return to sports usually takes around 4 to 6 months, depending on strength, stability, and rehabilitation progress. A structured physiotherapy programme is essential to ensure safe return to activity and reduce the risk of re-injury.

How is my case evaluated before travelling for ACL surgery?

Before travelling, your MRI scans and medical reports are reviewed to assess the injury and outline a preliminary plan.

The final decision is confirmed after clinical examination to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

What are the risks of having ACL reconstruction abroad?

The surgical risks are similar to those in your home country.

However, in treatment abroad, outcomes can be affected by gaps in planning, rehabilitation, or follow-up rather than the procedure itself.

How is recovery managed after returning home?

After returning home, recovery continues with a structured physiotherapy programme.

Clear communication and documentation help ensure safe progression and continuity of care.
