Meniscectomy Surgery

  • When Is Meniscectomy Surgery Considered?

Meniscectomy may be recommended when the damaged portion of the meniscus cannot be preserved and continues to cause symptoms affecting daily function.

    • MRI-confirmed meniscal tear not suitable for repair
    • Persistent knee pain or mechanical symptoms such as locking or catching
    • Degenerative or complex tear patterns with limited healing potential
    • Insufficient improvement despite physiotherapy, rest, or medication

The decision is based on tear type, location, tissue quality, and overall joint condition, with the aim of relieving symptoms while preserving as much functional meniscal tissue as possible.

  • About the Procedure

Meniscectomy is performed arthroscopically using minimally invasive techniques under spinal or general anaesthesia.

    • Small incisions are made around the knee joint
    • An arthroscope provides high-definition visual guidance
    • The damaged portion of the meniscus is selectively removed
    • Remaining healthy tissue is preserved to maintain joint stability and function
    • Final joint assessment is performed before closure

The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes. Most patients are discharged the same day or after an overnight stay.

  • Recovery Timeline
    • Hospital stay: same-day discharge or overnight stay
    • Weight-bearing: usually allowed early after surgery
    • Return to daily activities: typically within 2–6 weeks
    • Return to sports: usually within 4–8 weeks depending on recovery

Recovery is generally faster compared to meniscus repair, with focus on restoring mobility, strength, and joint function.

For international patients, treatment abroad is delivered through a coordinated medical programme including pre-travel evaluation, structured in-hospital care, detailed discharge documentation, and organised post-return follow-up to ensure continuity of care.

Professional and Compassionate I travelled to Turkey with Healing Journey in late January 2025. After a lengthy video call with Dr Mehmet and Anastasia, their reassurance convinced me to choose them. From start to finish everything went so smoothly. A car picked me up from the airport at 9pm on Sunday evening and took me straight to the hospital, where surprisingly Dr Mehmet and Anastasia were there too greet me. Tests and rays were done immediately and surgery followed the next morning.
Hospital staff were absolutely amazing, always so efficient and friendly. The surgeon visited every morning during my stay to check on my progress. Anastasia visited most days and kept in touch by text at all times.. SO comforting. She has continued to keep in touch after my return to UK I would not hesitate in recommending Healing Journey to anyone who is thinking about travelling to Turkey for any type of surgery. They went above and beyond my expectations throughout the whole process.

Great professional service.
I selected Healing Journey after searching for top rated medical travel services, and providers of hip replacement surgery in Turkey. This was based on the excellent reviews given of their services, the location (Antalya not Istanbul) and overall package. They were very proactive in discussing my needs from the start, and Anastasia has been the ever present professional who has coordinated all the services I needed, with efficiency and good humour. She made it a delight to work with and to have at the end of a phone/message to resolve any queries. She provided such a great personal service that I was made to feel like I was her main client - obviously I wasn't but such a good impression is so very important!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a meniscectomy?

Meniscectomy is the removal of the damaged part of the meniscus when the tear cannot be repaired. It is performed to relieve pain and mechanical symptoms such as locking or catching.

The aim is to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible, as excessive removal may affect long-term joint function.

When is meniscectomy recommended instead of repair?

Meniscectomy is recommended when the tear is located in a non-healing zone or when the tissue quality is not suitable for repair.

This decision is based on MRI findings and, when needed, confirmed during arthroscopic evaluation.

How is a meniscus tear diagnosed?

Diagnosis is made through clinical examination and MRI imaging. MRI helps identify the type, location, and extent of the tear.

This allows for accurate treatment planning before deciding between repair or removal.

How long does meniscectomy surgery take?

Meniscectomy is a relatively short procedure, typically taking 30 to 60 minutes. It is performed using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques.

Additional procedures, if needed, may slightly extend the duration.

How soon can I walk after meniscectomy?

Most patients are able to walk shortly after surgery, often on the same day with minimal support.

Early mobilisation helps reduce stiffness and supports a quicker return to daily activities.

What does the procedure involve, including anaesthesia and hospital stay?

The procedure is usually performed under spinal anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia when required.

It is typically a day-case surgery, and patients are discharged once initial recovery is complete.

How long does it take to recover after meniscectomy?

Recovery is generally quick, with many patients returning to daily activities within a few weeks.

The focus is on restoring mobility and strength without overloading the joint too early.

How is suitability confirmed before travelling?

Before travelling, MRI scans and medical reports are reviewed to determine whether removal or repair is the appropriate treatment.

This helps ensure that the surgical indication is clear in advance.

What are the risks of meniscus surgery abroad?

Surgical risks are generally low and similar across countries.

In treatment abroad, the main risk is inadequate diagnosis or lack of structured follow-up, which may affect recovery.

How is recovery managed after returning home?

After returning home, patients continue physiotherapy and gradually increase activity levels.

Clear medical documentation and guidance support safe recovery and continuity of care.
