Partial Knee Replacement

  • When Is Partial Knee Replacement Recommended?

Partial knee replacement may be recommended when joint damage is limited to a specific compartment of the knee and overall joint function can be preserved.

    • Localised cartilage damage affecting one part of the knee
    • Knee pain not responding to physiotherapy or medication
    • Preserved ligaments and remaining healthy joint structures
    • Desire to maintain more natural knee movement

Suitability depends on imaging findings, joint condition, and patient-specific factors. Careful evaluation is required to determine whether partial replacement is appropriate instead of total knee replacement.

  • About the Procedure

Partial knee replacement is performed to replace only the damaged portion of the joint while preserving healthy structures.

    • Removal of the damaged cartilage and bone in the affected compartment
    • Placement of a partial knee implant
    • Preservation of healthy ligaments and unaffected joint areas
    • Precise alignment to maintain natural joint movement

The procedure is typically performed under spinal or general anaesthesia and usually takes 60–90 minutes.

  • Recovery & Treatment Abroad Coordination
    • Hospital stay: 1–3 days
    • Total stay in Turkey: approximately 5–7 days
    • Early mobilisation and walking
    • Physiotherapy to restore movement and strength
    • Return to daily activities: typically within a few weeks

Recovery is generally faster compared to total knee replacement, with focus on restoring natural movement and joint function.

For international patients, treatment abroad is delivered through a coordinated medical programme including pre-travel evaluation, structured in-hospital care, detailed discharge documentation, and organised post-return follow-up to ensure continuity of care.

Professional and Compassionate I travelled to Turkey with Healing Journey in late January 2025. After a lengthy video call with Dr Mehmet and Anastasia, their reassurance convinced me to choose them. From start to finish everything went so smoothly. A car picked me up from the airport at 9pm on Sunday evening and took me straight to the hospital, where surprisingly Dr Mehmet and Anastasia were there too greet me. Tests and rays were done immediately and surgery followed the next morning.
Hospital staff were absolutely amazing, always so efficient and friendly. The surgeon visited every morning during my stay to check on my progress. Anastasia visited most days and kept in touch by text at all times.. SO comforting. She has continued to keep in touch after my return to UK I would not hesitate in recommending Healing Journey to anyone who is thinking about travelling to Turkey for any type of surgery. They went above and beyond my expectations throughout the whole process.

Great professional service.
I selected Healing Journey after searching for top rated medical travel services, and providers of hip replacement surgery in Turkey. This was based on the excellent reviews given of their services, the location (Antalya not Istanbul) and overall package. They were very proactive in discussing my needs from the start, and Anastasia has been the ever present professional who has coordinated all the services I needed, with efficiency and good humour. She made it a delight to work with and to have at the end of a phone/message to resolve any queries. She provided such a great personal service that I was made to feel like I was her main client - obviously I wasn't but such a good impression is so very important!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need partial or total knee replacement?

This depends on the location and extent of cartilage damage. If the damage is limited to one compartment, partial replacement may be possible. This is confirmed through detailed imaging and clinical assessment.

What are the advantages of partial knee replacement?

It preserves healthy joint structures, may allow more natural movement when performed in appropriately selected patients., and often results in faster early recovery.

Can partial knee replacement fail and require total replacement later?

Yes, in some cases further joint degeneration may occur over time, which can require conversion to total knee replacement. This depends on long-term joint progression and overall knee condition.

Is partial knee replacement suitable for younger patients?

It may be considered in selected patients, depending on joint condition, activity level, and alignment of the knee joint. Careful patient selection is important to ensure long-term outcomes.

What does the partial knee replacement involve, including hospital stay and type of anaesthesia?

Partial knee replacement is typically performed under spinal or combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia, sometimes with light sedation. General anaesthesia may be used in selected cases depending on patient factors.

The procedure usually takes around 60 to 90 minutes. Patients typically stay in hospital for 1 to 3 days, with early mobilisation and physiotherapy starting shortly after surgery.

How is suitability confirmed before travelling?

Suitability is confirmed through detailed imaging, including X-rays or MRI, along with clinical assessment. This ensures that the damage is limited to one compartment and that partial replacement is the correct surgical option.

What happens if I am not suitable for partial knee replacement?

If partial knee replacement is not appropriate, this is identified before travel. In such cases, alternative treatment options, including total knee replacement or non-surgical management, are considered based on your condition.

What is important when having partial knee replacement abroad?

Correct diagnosis and patient selection are essential, as performing partial replacement in unsuitable cases may affect long-term outcomes. Proper planning, communication, and follow-up are also important to ensure a safe and effective recovery.

How is follow-up managed after returning home?

After returning home, recovery continues with physiotherapy and gradual return to daily activities. Patients receive detailed medical documentation and a structured rehabilitation plan to support continuity of care and safe recovery.

How long does it take to recover after partial knee replacement?

Recovery after partial knee replacement is generally faster than total knee replacement.

In the first few weeks, patients focus on pain control and basic mobility. Many patients return to daily activities within a few weeks, depending on their condition and rehabilitation progress.

Further improvement in strength and function continues over the following months, with recovery supported by structured physiotherapy.
