Total Knee Replacement

  • When Is Total Knee Replacement Recommended?

Total knee replacement is typically recommended for patients with advanced knee arthritis or significant joint damage causing persistent pain, reduced mobility, and functional limitation.

    • Ongoing knee pain limiting walking, stairs, or daily activities
    • Advanced osteoarthritis or cartilage loss confirmed on imaging
    • Insufficient improvement despite physiotherapy, medication, or injections
    • Stiffness, deformity, or instability affecting independence

To assess suitability, imaging and medical history are reviewed prior to treatment, allowing appropriate planning and decision-making.

  • About the Procedure

Total knee replacement is performed to relieve pain, restore alignment, and improve joint function by replacing damaged joint surfaces with prosthetic components.

    • Removal of worn cartilage and damaged bone surfaces
    • Precise positioning of implant components to restore alignment
    • Balancing of soft tissues to ensure stability
    • Early mobilisation and guided physiotherapy after surgery

The procedure is typically performed under spinal or general anaesthesia and takes approximately 1–2 hours.

  • Recovery & Treatment Planning for International Patients
    • Hospital stay: approximately 3 days
    • Total stay in Turkey: around 7–10 days
    • Early mobilisation within the first days
    • Structured physiotherapy programme
    • Return to daily activities: approximately 4–8 weeks
    • Full recovery: typically 3–6 months

Recovery focuses on restoring mobility, strength, and long-term joint function through structured rehabilitation.

For international patients, treatment abroad is delivered through a coordinated medical programme including pre-travel evaluation, structured in-hospital care, detailed discharge documentation, and organised post-return follow-up to ensure continuity of care.

Professional and Compassionate I travelled to Turkey with Healing Journey in late January 2025. After a lengthy video call with Dr Mehmet and Anastasia, their reassurance convinced me to choose them. From start to finish everything went so smoothly. A car picked me up from the airport at 9pm on Sunday evening and took me straight to the hospital, where surprisingly Dr Mehmet and Anastasia were there too greet me. Tests and rays were done immediately and surgery followed the next morning.
Hospital staff were absolutely amazing, always so efficient and friendly. The surgeon visited every morning during my stay to check on my progress. Anastasia visited most days and kept in touch by text at all times.. SO comforting. She has continued to keep in touch after my return to UK I would not hesitate in recommending Healing Journey to anyone who is thinking about travelling to Turkey for any type of surgery. They went above and beyond my expectations throughout the whole process.

Great professional service.
I selected Healing Journey after searching for top rated medical travel services, and providers of hip replacement surgery in Turkey. This was based on the excellent reviews given of their services, the location (Antalya not Istanbul) and overall package. They were very proactive in discussing my needs from the start, and Anastasia has been the ever present professional who has coordinated all the services I needed, with efficiency and good humour. She made it a delight to work with and to have at the end of a phone/message to resolve any queries. She provided such a great personal service that I was made to feel like I was her main client - obviously I wasn't but such a good impression is so very important!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a knee replacement, or are there alternatives?

Knee replacement is usually considered when non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, injections, or medication no longer provide sufficient relief. The final decision is made by the orthopaedic surgeon after clinical evaluation, imaging, and consideration of your age, overall health, and how much your daily life is affected.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate before travelling?

Suitability is assessed according to established medical guidelines and a detailed clinical evaluation of your imaging and medical history. In most cases, if you have already been considered a candidate for knee replacement in your home country, it is highly likely that you would also be suitable for treatment abroad - provided the indication is confirmed.

Is it actually safe to have knee replacement treatment abroad?

Yes - the safety of knee replacement does not depend on the country, but on the quality of clinical assessment, surgical expertise, and post-operative care. When performed in accredited hospitals with experienced orthopaedic surgeons and proper medical coordination, outcomes are comparable to those in developed healthcare systems in your home country.

What is the difference between having knee replacement abroad and in my home country?

When treatment is arranged abroad, it requires structured medical coordination - including pre-travel evaluation, surgical planning, hospital organisation, and post-operative follow-up after you return home.

Without this level of planning and continuity, important aspects such as recovery, communication, and complication management can be more difficult to handle across different healthcare systems.

Why do patients choose to have knee replacement in Turkey?

Turkey is often chosen because of experienced orthopaedic surgeons, internationally recognised implant systems, and accredited hospitals - offering high-quality healthcare at a more accessible cost.

However, for international patients, access to surgery alone is not always enough. Travelling for treatment involves multiple steps - including planning, communication, and follow-up - which need to be properly organised to ensure a smooth and safe overall experience.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for knee replacement treatment?

Most patients stay in Turkey for approximately 10 days. This includes pre-operative assessment, the surgery itself, hospital recovery, and early mobilisation before travelling back home.

What happens immediately after knee replacement surgery?

After surgery, patients are encouraged to start moving the knee within the first 24 hours. Early mobilisation is important to reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and support recovery.

You will begin physiotherapy in the hospital, focusing on walking with support, basic movements, and restoring joint mobility before discharge. If clinically required, early recovery may continue at the hotel before travelling.

After returning home, physiotherapy should continue for several weeks, either through a local rehabilitation centre or with a structured home exercise programme to support long-term recovery.

What happens after I return home following knee replacement abroad?

After returning home, your recovery continues with physiotherapy and gradual return to daily activities. You will receive detailed medical documentation, including your surgical report, discharge summary, and rehabilitation plan.

Follow-up is an important part of treatment abroad. Any concerns during recovery can be assessed based on your progress, and guidance can be provided to help you continue safely within your local healthcare system.

A well-structured post-operative plan helps ensure continuity of care and reduces the risk of complications during recovery.

What are the risks of having knee replacement treatment abroad?

The surgical risks of knee replacement are similar regardless of where the procedure is performed and include infection, blood clots, stiffness, or implant-related issues.

However, in treatment abroad, additional risks may arise from poor planning, incorrect patient selection, or lack of structured follow-up after returning home.

For this reason, careful pre-operative evaluation, clear communication, and coordinated post-operative care are essential to ensure a safe recovery and reduce the risk of complications.

How long does it take to fully recover after knee replacement?

Recovery progresses in stages. In the first few weeks, the focus is on pain control and basic mobility. By around 4–6 weeks, most patients regain independence in daily activities.

Further improvement in strength and mobility continues over the following months, with full recovery typically taking 3 to 6 months.

Recovery time can vary depending on age, overall health, and adherence to physiotherapy.
